There is no doubt that Jaco was the baddest cat ever to sling an electric bass around his shoulder. The proof is in the pudding: check out any of his recordings, and you will hear a master of the groove like no other. Dazzling technique, yet so darned FUNKY!Having read biographies of Charlie Parker, I was struck by the similarities between the two who died far too young. Both lived to excess and died as a result of their debilitating addictions. And both turned the jazz world on its ear with their exhilharating innovations.I found this book to be pretty inspirational, at least in terms of Jaco's virtuosity. It is also an interesting tale about how NOT to live. Nevertheless, I found Milkowski's style to be to more like a lengthy DownBeat article than what one might expect in a 200+ page biography. I wish that he had probed Jaco's psychological problems more, offering some more in-depth analysis on what led him to such a self-destructive lifestyle. Rather, he spends little time on the precursors of Jaco's mental illness, and prefers to give anecdotes and concrete examples of his drug and alcohol problems. True, he goes into some explicit detail about Jaco's binges, but says far too little about Jaco's severely pathological narcissism, which seems to have fueled his frustrations. What led to Jaco's grandiosity? Truly, he had a world class personality disorder, yet Milkowski pretty much ignores this.Maybe I expect too much; Milkowski is a music writer, not a shrink, but when psychopathology is so extreme, I think a more analytical account is more than warranted. Maybe someone else will eventually tackle the psyche of who who Peter Erskine's psychiatrist father described to a fellow psychiatrist upon Jaco's stay at Bellevue, "the most challenging case you will ever see."But all that aside, the book is a quick and enjoyable read, and anything about Jaco is probably worthwhile.
I have read the whole book. Hardly putting it down. I knew nothing of the drama or of how close to my own walk of life Jaco was. As much as I have never done drugs and do not mark myself as a genius at all. I totally understand the problems of anger, money, love, etc mismanagement. It is enough stress on a person to be under performance pressure. This is the buffer of having agents. But to keep everything in a nutshell I think all along Jaco was expressed as a very sane person. I too would hate a system that allows your gift to be trampled over. If it were a patented thing oh boy we would all be in trouble. The art of music is so deep and touching that it kind of serves as a witness report to David in the time of old who was able to move the evil spirit from the king. As stated in the book it is not the same hearing Jaco's work copied than it is to hear it fresh from his fingers. And oh what a joy it must have been to know the man in his times of peace. As for the women in his life. I think the system attempts to make sense of it all and lay down some guidelines but overall if the children do not get good management skills from the start then whos to know when the best come forth from the ashes of the land. We should all have the best of training but ultimatly if we give in to the pressures of the streets and the overwhelming push of the lost ones to save them. How long shall the gifted poor last. Jaco was not God himself but of his talent he surely was the best. Not because he could do it all but because he had heart and touched ours too. I wish God himself would forgive Jaco for his mismanaged anger. For punishing us by punishing himself and we losing a true saint of music to a misunderstanding culture. We lost a good man. John. It is a poignant and rivetting foiray into the psyche of a tumultously and excitable man in whcih you will experience love, hate, joy, elation, and utter heartbreak as those who knew Jaco personally must have. Milkowski paints a gorgeous portrait of a young Jaco so that he may realistically tear it down with the tragedy that Jaco placed upon himself. I will never look at my own life or music the same way.
Jaco ist einfach mein Held....nicht nur musikalisch, sondern auch in vielen Dingen menschlich...die ersten 2/3 des Buches sind toll, informativ, inspirierend....allerdings geht der Autor gegen Ende für mich viel zu sehr auf irgendwelche Details nach dem Motto "was crazy Jaco alles angestellt hat" ein. Ich finde das absolut repektlos und unangemessen. Viel mehr hätten die Gründe für diese Exzesse hinterfragt und dargestellt werden sollen....dies ist leider nur teilweise geschehen. Trotzdem ein gutes Buch, wenn auch mit einem Faden Beigeschmack....
Ich habe das Buch in den Ferien gelesen, da Jaco leider nur 35 geworden ist, ist es auch nicht so dick. Das English ist leicht verständlich und man gewöhnt sich schnell an den Stil des Autors.Das Buch hat mich gefesselt, ich habe tiefe Einblicke in Jaco's Leben erhalten, da der Autor ihn ja persönlich kannte.Was mit ein bisschen an dem Buch fehlt ist die handwerkliche Innovation: Jaco war ja der erste, der dem Bass die Bünde abgezogen hat und diesen weichen, singenden Klang erzeugen konnte - das fällt so ein bisschen unter den Tisch. Ansonsten ist das Buch voll mit schönen Anekdoten und trotz des irrationalen Verhalten von Jaco gegen Ende kann man sich mit ihm identifizieren und ihn verstehen.Er wurde übrigens in der Nacht nach meinem 2. Geburtstag, dem 11. September 1987 zu Tode geprügelt.
